Hello, it's time to talk about serendipity, one of the most magical things in life. It often changes us for the better. Nevertheless, there is a catch, it is impossible to see it in action.
The year is 1999, and I was attempting to succeed by surfing the dot-com wave. I created a website about the Palm Pilot, my passion at the time, it got popular, and I was starting to make good money. But as we all know, that bubble burst. Anyway, not all was lost. I gained a lot of knowledge and ended up meeting many extraordinary entrepreneurs, one of whom became a great friend.
Now let's jump to 2010. I needed a change in my life. Even though I hold a degree in Economics, I've always been interested in the field of international relations. So, this was the perfect opportunity to return to school for a post-graduation.
The course was something I dedicated my heart and soul to, I loved each moment of it, but eventually, I decided to focus on my consulting business. The year was 2012.
Well, to make that possible, I needed a good contract and like magic it happened. It was an organization that was looking for a consultant to work on a project with very specific needs. The person must speak some languages, hold a degree in international relations, and be able to discuss technical details with the developers responsible for creating an online system.
That was me, right? But there's more.
Remember my 1999 friend? He had just married and moved to the city I was living in. So, naturally, we started seeing each other more frequently. In short, his wife had a friend who was struggling for some time. The friend was looking for a consultant with a very specific skill set.
It's almost unbelievable, isn't it? I, personally, have a hard time believing that this actually happened.
Although this was a major star alignment, things like this frequently happen in my life because I'm always doing something different. I have some of my passions listed on my website, but there are many others. I'm constantly looking for non-traditional projects to work on.
And, if you are still here, I have two suggestions. A book all about serendipity, and a TED Talk explaining how working on multiple projects can create astonishing opportunities.
Best, Vlad.
